Unfortunately these things don't come on our schedule and that is why I have been working toward knowing what I need to know... even though I really thought that I would get more time.. more warning... more well, uh... I don't know, but more.
Of course there is a part of me kicking and screaming at the injustices of it all but when I breath and really look at things I am lucky. I still have most of my "illusion of control", at the moment, and I still have so many choices that I can make to ensure that I will be an active and productive part of any community.
The fear surrounding the current global situation is trying to do my head in. I can't control what the stock market, the banks, the housing market or anything else at the National or International level does but I can control my household and the links we have to the community.
This year was my proclaimed Year of the Community but various things have happened that forced reality to be more about stamping out fires at home so I decided I really need to focus. I need some structure and I need to be doing it along side a group of people that think these things are important too.
To make things easier for me I already had an idea which was sparked by Sharon Astyk's Independence Days Challenge. When I first saw this challenge around the middle of Autumn I thought it was a great idea to keep you focused and on track going through the Spring/Summer Season. Of course I could have joined as I was running a Winter garden but it was probably just going to cause me frustration so I decided sanity was more important than participation.
Every time the Independence Days updates came through I thoroughly read other peoples achievements I saw people methodically getting things done in the high season... so they can eat well in the low season. They were focused on a worthwhile goal and slowly chipping away until they got there and most of them achieved a phenomenal amount. Just as importantly they were keeping records. It was so wonderful to see and in the end I wrote to Sharon and asked if she would mind me running a slightly different version here for the Spring/Summer Season. I am so excited about the fact that she agreed to let me use her premise to create the Back to Basics Challenge.
The Back to Basics Challenge for those who choose to accept is to report weekly or fortnightly on either their blog or in comments here on the topics of
- Sowing seed or Planting
- Planning for The Future - meal planning, the next seasons garden plan, working out storage plans or more long term goals and projects like plans for digging root cellars
- Working for the Future - storing food, managing stores, preserving, building that home made cob or solar oven, adding house insulation, saving for manual grain mills etc
- Building Community - volunteering, donations, joining an existing community group, forming your own community group, taking a cake to a friend having a hard time, calling someone you just let drift out of your life, etc
- Learn a new Skill

Brilliant idea Belinda and I will sign up for this and try to do a weekly audit of what I have achieved through this.
Woohoo, my first participant..
Thanks The Crone
Kind Regards
Belinda
I really like the sound of this challenge.
I do many of these things already but sometimes I forget and slip back to old ways. This will be great to keep my on track.
So my hand is up!
~Emily
Awesome...
Welcome Emily
Hi Belinda, I have something similar just started on my blog, not a group, just my Sunday reporting on the weeks activities similar to your list, will keep me on track lol
Blessings:)
Hi Molly,
Good luck with your record keeping and weekly reporting.
I saw your post, and though how similar they are, while I was waiting for permission from Sharon.
Kind Regards
Belinda
i'm in. don't expect much from me but it'll be good to have something to remind me.
Welcome Maia,
Great to see you saw the spirit of the challenge and decided to join in.
Its not about having something to fill in every week on every topic, although its fantastic if you can, its mostly about remembering to think about these things at least once a week and trying to do more.
Kind Regards
Belinda
great idea... I am all systems go with the Growing Challenge but I need a little reminder to keep working on other things... so I'm in.. well when I remember, and when I have something decent to report!
Hi Katef,
Welcome to the Back to Basics Challenge.
While the challenge has a pretty small number of participants I will just check before I write my round up to see if there is a post to link to from the bloggers entered.
Kind Regards
Belinda
I am joining the challenge, do I have to link to you n any way?
Welcome GreenFumb,
I am certainly not going to insist if you don't think it would be useful. I generally find a link through to the challenge is helpful as it allows people to go through and check the combined updates if they wish.
For that purpose this one would probably be the most appropriate

Sorry Belinda, didn't mean to imply I didn't want to only that I am new to blogging and find some things difficult. I have however now managed to link to the Challenge and am busily working on it as much as possible
Cheers

Hi GreenFumb,
Written only forums do make tone hard at times. I thought it was probably something like that and didn't really expect that you had a concern with linking but occasionally people have some type of issue with doing so which made me think I should address the question.
Something you might find useful for the future is that if you add a HTML/Javascript widget to your side bar you can just cut and paste all that weird code that most challenge bloggers display in their post straight in and it will be job done. If the blogger got it right it will give you the challenge icon with a link that is activated when someone clicks on the picture. It makes it slightly easier for you so you don't have to continue making secondary links all the time.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Welcome Tracy,
Never too late... Hope you have fun.

Just wondering, is there a certain day that everyone is posting on? I'm about to write my first one, and wondered if I needed to save it for a specific day...
lv,
Joy
Hi Joy,
I am really not picky about the day, these things have to fit around very busy lives.
My group Round Ups are being done Sunday afternoon Aussie time and any posts that I can find that were not included in the previous week are included so with that in mind feel free to do what ever works for you and your blog.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Ok, thanks Belinda :)I'll do mine at the end of the week, I think.
lv,
Joy
I'd love to join in...please... :-) If I'm not too late....
Welcome aboard Gail,
I will be looking with interest for your reports... Being O/S from most of the current participants it will be fun to find out what you are up to at this time of year.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Hi Belinda,
I'm just finding your blog and the B2BC, and I'd love to hop onboard even though I'm a bit late to the game. I've gotten so out of balance with work this year that I all but stopped blogging, and being part of a group like this would be great.
I guess I'd best give you an early-update, too! Or do we post those in our own blogs and send them to you like Weekend Herb Blogging? (at which I've lapsed, so terribly, since that heady first couple of years)
warm regards,
Strata Rose C

Hi Strata,
Welcome aboard... I suspect for you this would actually be a pretty good time to start. Hope to see your spring/summer planning coming along well.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Oh.. Please post on your own blog, it is so important for all of us to have a personal record of this.
I just go through and check all the participant blogs for an update post since I last reported when I am pulling together the post here.
Kind Regards
Belinda
Hi Belinda, I have just started blogging recently and have just come across your Back 2 Basics Challenge and would love to participate. I think it could be just what I need to get some order into my somewhat disorganised system of recording whats happening in our journey to a more self sufficient life. I hope it is not too late. (hopefully it will keep going through the autumn and winter) Regards Julie
Hi Michelle,
Sorry for the late reply, we had a fire warning here on Saturday that kept us busy.
You most certainly can join.. I will add your blog to the list.
Kind Regards
Belinda
i'd love to be a part of this challenge... it certainly can be a challenge sometimes! what with the local wildlife and a crazy dog that loves to dig. I'll be harvesting the olives shortly! shelley
Hi Shelly,
Welcome to the challenge and the nut house that is Autumn harvesting.
I would love to see more details on the olive harvest and processing when you do it. I have a young tree that I some day hope will provide us with a crop.
Kind Regards
Belinda
