Living the Theory of Anyway

The Theory of Anyway is this nifty little way of looking at the world that argues "95% of what is needed to resolve the coming crisis in energy depletion, or climate change, or whatever is what we should do anyway, and when in doubt about how to change, we should change our lives to reflect what we should be doing “Anyway.”

It really is interesting. If you think about it one of the reasons many of us have made changes is because we were not feeling connected with our lives. I certainly felt I had handed the responsibility for too many things and lost the joy of feeling competent. I suspect at some level we all recognised our dependence on a system devoid of an ability to care and it sowed the seeds of concern. If the entities that support our lives as individuals don't care that we exist it makes us vulnerable in ways that are extremely scary.

My biggest step toward living the Theory of Anyway was to recognise that my family doesn't live in a bubble. The decisions we make ripple through the world shaping both the present and more importantly our future.

Honestly, I don't want to be scared of loosing access to the trappings of modern society like mains power. Be the loss for hours, days or ever I need to feel confident that push comes to shove that although it would be inconvenient that we can do what we need to do without them. I want to know that I can live without all the help, nice as it is to have.

You know what, I want to be an Adult. One of those people that is making responsible decisions because they confident in their skills. That are aware of their strengths and weaknesses allowing them to decide to take the "hard road" when it will give a better outcome.

It might be just one small step but at the end of it all I would like to know I did what I should have done "Anyway".

Wonderful post Belinda. I was thinking yesterday I have a way to go to be the adult my Mum and Nana were.

Well in Mum's case, are or is.

Thanks Linda,

A lack of necessity really is a trap.

I find it is often in fully facing the necessities of life that we are challenged to stretch and grow in very interesting ways.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Enlightenment, Belinda!

There is a name for it! That's exactly my view. I get mad at a lot of climate change groups for what I believe to be their poor communications that turn people off instead of tuning people in.

Running round sprouting so many parts per million makes most peoples eyes glaze over. However, when we talk about our behaviour, what used to happen, how the folks before us lived and so on, well - I find people comprehend this.

It is not difficult for people to comprehend that irrespective of who argues what about the science and whatever govts do or don't do, there are things that we know and understand for ourselves about how we should live.

The thing then is - as you yourself are doing your best to be an exemplar of - to build community so we can encourage one another and so that people don't feel isolated in living a simple and ethical life.

Thank you for that. BTW, is there a source for the Theory of Anyway or is it one of those magical things that has just come to us out of the air?

Blessings and bliss

The thing that concerns me is that so much of our society is designed for coping with things a certain way.

For example, our houses are built poorly and uninsulated in many cases, and designed to be heated with electricity. Take the electricity out of the equation and you have a lot of poorly built houses, and a lot of cold people. Not good.

I live in a city where a lot of people live in substandard housing, and just cope by heating extra with more electricity.

I just see a lot of people doing it hard. We're the lucky ones, but I see a lot of not so lucky people.

Hi Miss Eagle,

Thanks for the appreciation of what I am attempting to achieve.

The originator of the "theory of anyway" was an american blogger called Pat Meadows, http://entire-of-itself.blogspot.com/2007/01/theory-of-anyway.html . As you can see her focus is not at all unlike your own.

Hi Daharja,

I totally agree with all your concerns and that is why I find this outlook so useful. It is about making moral and responsible decisions, about doing the best we can with what we have both individually and as a society.

You're right, people have got by cutting corners for a lot of years and the legacies of this are going to haunt our future. That is one of the specific reasons that I think those of us with the knowledge and capacity to plan need to ensure we are making the best decisions that we can ensuring we leave a path of knowing behind us.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Miss Eagle I loved this sentence:

"The thing then is - as you yourself are doing your best to be an exemplar of - to build community so we can encourage one another and so that people don't feel isolated in living a simple and ethical life." you made it easier to understand.

If you google the theory of anyway you can I think see a little where it came from.
