Wow, We have a Female PM!

I guess a part of me never really expected to hear the words Female Prime Minister when referring to the leader of Australia. Why do I surmise this, it's due to the fact that when I heard it with no warning today the overriding feeling I had was shock.

Yesterday A was sick so I didn't have even my normal, minimal, exposure to commercial media. As always 24hrs is a long time in politics, particularly when you disrespect someone you shouldn't. So it was without any warning that this morning the announcer on RRR announced that Australia had our 27th PM, Julia Gillard, and for a second my world tilted.

I have no idea what she is going to be able to achieve with the time she has left before the election. The reality is, that now and forever more no other female that reaches the ultimate height of politics in Australia will have to wear that label of strangeness that is "The First".

Hi Belinda,

I got a whisper of it last night when I came from work.

It'll be ineresting to see how the Australian public will vote. I think there is still a little bit of underlying sexism that may come out come election time.

Here's hoping that she realises the importance of acting on climate change.

Or it will be Turf Julia time in the Labor rooms when the polls go down on her too.

We don't have the news on at night, my husband has his radio on at news time but I don't listen to it usually. So it was on Facebook I got the news. Looked on the web, there was nothing, except there was to be TV at 12.30. Eventually I got Austar plugged in etc. and the signal was out. Eventually I saw her sworn in. Imagine a Queen, a female Governor General and female Prime Minister.

Hi Nevyn,

I will be extremely interested to see how Australia votes. As you I am unsure how much entrenched sexism will come into play. I hope she manages to win the next election as it would set a precedent that simply couldn't be undone.

Hi Daharja,

Here's hoping. The problem is that with less than 6 months to call an election it's going to be tough to get any real scores on the board.

Kind Regards
Belinda

Hi Linda,

I have to say I never expected to see the day that all of those influential offices would be guided by women, let alone at the same time. It's a bit mind blowing.

Kind Regards
Belinda
